WHAT IS AYURVEDA
Ayurveda is the name of the ancient Indian science of life. It is believed to have originated more than four thousand years ago and is probably the oldest health system known to man today. Rather than treating symptoms, it treats the whole person, working holistically, combining nutrition, herbal remedies, yoga and massage.
It is a multifaceted system but in its simplest form it is designed to benefit the client on an emotional, psychological and physical level. It combines looking at the lifestyle of the client, considering diet and, in particular, will look at the client's dominant body type (dosha) which dictates treatment on an individual basis.
Massage is an important part of Ayurvedic treatments but instead of concentrating on Western techniques that manipulate body contours it works on marma (vital) points, to open up energy channels which are believed to be causing negative sypmtoms, as a direct result of an imbalance or blockage in these energy channels. Once imbalances are corrected and any blockages cleared the body can return to an optimum state of wellbeing.
MUKHABHYANGA
This is Ayurvedic Facial Massage which is a detoxifying treatment that is customised to each individual's dosha and utilises natural Ayurvedic oils formulated from wild herbs, botanical extracts and herbal preparations. These deeply cleanse, hydrate and stimulate the skin. During the thirty minute treatment marma point massage is used to relax facial muscles and relieve stress lines. Marma points are the key connection points where bones, tendons and underlying structures join together. Manipulation of these points helps to promote wellbeing and the total treatment is a wonderfully relaxing experience.
SHIRODHARA
Warm oils are gently poured in a slow, dynamic movement over the forehead marma (third eye) in a continuous flow from a special vessel for about twenty minutes. Profoundly relaxing this treatment works to switch off a chattering mind, to induce deep rest for a renewed energy and calm that borders on meditation. A holistic marma point facial massage precedes the Shirodara. This treatment is sheer bliss and can be helpful in releasing tension and stress, promoting a feeling of wellbeing.
